The History of A Beat (2013)

Benjy Benjamin.

To start this experiment off, something recent, a mixtape that grew out of my sudden, unassuageable, weeks-long addiction to Mark Ronson’s beautiful version of “Valerie” (a song by a pretty good UK band, thitherto unknown to me, called the Zutons), with its sneakily heartbreaking Amy Winehouse lead vocal. Filed under Thematic, this one pursues through time like an evil Highlander the heavily swung, on-the-2-and-the-4 beat introduced by Benny Benjamin on the Supremes “You Can’t Hurry Love” (some people want to source it to Krupa on “Swing Swing Swing,” but I’m not buying it).

I am still not 100% on “American Girl,” but it’s such a great song.
